The Grand Hotel is
situated on the foreshore of Thursday Island, fondly called T.I. It's a hilly little
island approximately 25ha in area with its deepwater port is the centre for almost all the
activities of the Torres Strait, Government Administration, Commerce, Marine Industries,
Education, Religion, Medical care, Shipping, Local Naval operations, Radio Communication
and Tourism. One of the main features of this island is the large number of different
nationalities which reside on the island. It is not the typical tourist island, it is the administration centre of the Torres Straits, which consist of 23 islands. The main industry of the "locals" is fishing, crayfish and bech-demer and pearl farming. This has been the same since the island was settled in the early 17th century. The original Grand Hotel c.1890, was destroyed by fire in 1993 and unfortunately a great deal of history went down with it. Somerset Maughan is believed to have written a few short stories from the verandah of the old hotel whilst enjoying a gin sling, and taking in the spectacular view of the Torres Strait. Today, the view is just as captivating. The facilities and amenities have improved with ther construction of the New Grand Hotel. |

All rooms are on the first floor of the Hotel, have their own ensuite and are tastefully decorated. Each room has a view either over the ocean, or over the hills of the Island itself. They have direct dial telephones, fans, airconditioning and television, with in-house movie channel. Tea/coffee making facilities, and bar fridge is also included. Each room has access to the Verandah and a guest laundry is available for hotel guests. |

Fishing Charters, Bus
Tours, Boat Tours of the Island, Museum Tours, can all be arranged through reception. Wharf fishing, catch yourself a coral trout or trevally off the main wharf only 50 metres from the Hotel. Bicycles available for hire to explore
the island at your leisure. |
